NMEDA Continues Growth as Mobility Issues Amplify

(PRWEB) December 17, 2004
NMEDA is a non-profit trade association of mobility equipment dealers, driver rehabilitation specialists, and other professionals dedicated to broadening the opportunities for people with disabilities to drive or be transported in vehicles modified with mobility equipment. All members work together to improve transportation options of people with disabilities.
Formed originally as an association of mobility equipment dealers in the state of Florida, membership opened on a national level in 1989 and the National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association was established. The organization promotes and supports individual members engaged in the modification of quality transportation for people with disabilities. Membership has grown to over 650 members with the bulk of the membership located in the United States and Canada.
NMEDA members adhere to the safety standards of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and follow the NMEDA Guidelines. NMEDA members update the Guidelines, a living document providing detailed recommended practices on equipment installation and modifications, yearly. Every NMEDA member agrees to follow these Guidelines when they join the association.
The Quality Assurance Program (QAP) is a nationally recognized accreditation program for the mobility equipment industry. The program promotes quality, safety, and reliability within the industry. Some states now require a dealerÂÂs participation in the QAP to perform work for the Vocational Rehabilitation Programs. The QAP is the only program of this nature developed for the mobility equipment industry. A QAP designation enhances vehicle modification and mobility equipment installation in a manner consistent with the highest guidelines available in the industry. The states that have adapted the program include South Carolina, Ohio, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico and New York.
Kentucky is pending. Louisiana and North Carolina require QAP or an equivalent.
NMEDA offers QAP workshops, national updates in their Circuit Breaker Newsletter and will hold the 14th Annual Conference, February 9-12, 2005 at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Florida. The featured speaker is Jeffrey Gitomer. 800-833-0427. www.nmeda.org

Question by bridesfan: Can I use one of those power converters you plug into the car to recharge the battery for my mobility scooter?
The scooter takes (2) 12V/12AH batteries and I usually plug the charger into the scooter then into a 3 prong outlet at home. Would I be able to safely plug this into a converter in my car when not in use to keep the battery charged and ready?

Answer by Team Crayons
Yes, it would be safe, just make sure to unplug it after it’s done so the converter doesn’t overheat.

Is Your Mobility Scooters Battery Life Fading?

Is Your Mobility Scooters Battery Life Fading?
For some having a mobility product is a gift sent from God. Not only does the mobility scooters allow easier access when shopping, they also allow the peice of mind that I don’t have to stay at home. I can ride around the neighbor saying hello to the kids, make frequent trips to local stores, as well as visit the mailman at the mailbox without struggling to get there and back or waiting for my busy son or daughter to come over. Most physically disabled people will agree that mobility scooters can be priceless.
When I researched the subject more in debt, I found out that the complaint is not the scooters; most are concerned about the battery life. How would you like to know that when you go out for that daily ride or stroll to the park, that you may run out of battery? Here you are stuck in the park or on the road with no communication with anyone, but strangers passing you by looking awkwardly at you wondering what your doing. And to ask for help? Maybe 1 in 5 people will even stop, but eventually you want that one person to help you. However what will you ask them? To take you home? Or, “Would you please take my keys and go into my house and grab the battery charger? And on the way out grab the extension cord…the really long one…?” Well I think this is why they actually invented the cellphone right? NOT! You are stuck! Stuck until you can get home to charge the battery. I’m gonna give you a few tips to insure that your not stuck on the road looking for a stranger to help.
Make sure that when your mobility scooter arrives to your home that you immediately charge the battery for a minimum of 12 to 14 hours, basically overnight before you ever take your new mobility scooter out.
Purchase the necessary extra batteries when you order a mobility scooter. This way you will always have a extra battery with you at all times that is charged to get you back home if your main battery dies.
Completely run your battery down to less than 10% before you re-charge. Try not to go out to the mailbox and then as soon as you get back plug it into the charger. This will kill your battery life sooner.
When purchasing a mobility scooter you can always pay attention to the span of a fully charged battery by reading the specifications before purchase. Click here for an example of the specifications of a Pride Go-Go Elite traveller 3 Wheel Mobility Scooter
Know the range of your scooter. Most manufacturers will list a range, top speed, and weight capacity. All of these factors will come into play when deciding on a mobility scooter and the accessories.
Remember that if you own a mobility scooter or currently in search of purchasing one for a loved-one, please take my recommendation and get that extra battery; it’s worth it. In addition learn more about mobility scooters, power wheelchairs and the accessories, because there are many other medical accessories for your mobility scooter that can assist you with any discomforts, malfunctions and/or issues of concern when traveling. In fact, EasyMedOnline.com has a team of servicemen nationwide that can assist with any mechanical defects, purchase of extra batteries, and will service your mobility scooters nationwide.
Until next time, ride safe and get that extra battery; it’s to late if your already stranded to start thinking about getting one.
